Anti-Islamic Graffiti Found on Evergreen Cemetery Grave

For the sixth time in less than two years, a grave in Evergreen Cemetery has been desecrated with anti-Muslim writings.

Police have confirmed that a grave in Evergreen Cemetery, 3401 W. 87th St., has been desecrated with anti-Muslim writings.

The graffiti, written in black marker, contains derogatory statements about the prophet Muhammad. It is the sixth time this particular grave has been desecrated since March 2011, said Police Lt. Peter Donovan.

Earlier media reports misstated the number of graves marked. The confusion may have arisen from the fact that the grave site contains a bench, tombstone and obelisk, all of which were desecrated, Donovan said.

The writing includes the phrase "Raghead Killer", gang signs and assorted profanities aimed at the Prophet Muhammad.

Police have not yet determined a motivation in the incident.

Clean-up of the site should be fairly quick as the writings were done with a marker and a power washer was able to remove them in the past, Donovan said.

The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, told Sun-Times media that the cemetery is home to about 500 Muslim graves.

In a press release, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said that, "staff attorneys are following up on the case with the mayor of Evergreen Park, the Cook County state attorney and the FBI."
