To the Teachers of School District 124

A teacher pens a letter to her former teachers in Evergreen Park Dist. 124.

A story:

There once was a 6-year-old who went to school, pretty unwillingly. How could anyone want to leave home to go to school all day? Well, it didn’t take long for that 6-year-old to change her mind. She actually liked going to school. Her teachers taught her to love to read. Her teachers taught her to be fascinated by the world, its people and many... cultures. But most importantly, her teachers taught her respect and to always stick up for what is right.

Thank you for continuing to be an example of respect. Thank you for continuing to stick up for what is right. Most of all, thank you for sticking up for your students, their education, and the entire village of Evergreen Park. Even though you are out of the classroom, you continue to teach important lessons to both your students and your community.

For every unkind word that is thrown at you, for every disheartening meeting, and every day you wait for the right decision to be made - please know there are thousands of students that are successful, healthy and happy adults because of you. You are the backbone of our community, you are the reason so many people love the village of Evergreen Park.

And that six-year-old, is now twenty-four. She still loves to read. She is still fascinated by the world. And she still goes to school everyday---this time as the teacher.

With respect and admiration,
Molly Malone

....and 1800 students in Evergreen Park will be cheated out of an education today because that "teacher" decided that what was "right" was to walk out on her children not for their sake, but so she can get raises greater than the cost of living, have the taxpayers pay about half of HER pension contributions, pay for a whopping 75-90% of her health insurance costs, and 95% of the TEACHERS' CONTRIBUTION for early retirement in addition to that required of the district by statute. Oh, and don't forget it not being "right" in her mind that the quality of her teaching, and that of her peers, be a factor in how much money she makes. It's clear that little girl's heart was in the right place, Molly. What a shame she never learned that what is RIGHT is meeting your responsiblities, NOT shirkinig them because of personal GREED!

No teacher EVER has been in it for personal greed! The teachers have been asked to contribute thousands of dollars more for their benefits, which they simply can not afford. They offered in April to freeze their contract so the new superintendent would not have to begin his tenure with a bargaining war, but the school board said no. Teachers have never been in it for the money; they continue to teach because they know they make a difference. That liitle girl's heart AND mind were in the right place, and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise, Molly.

Well put, Molly! I agree that the teachers in Evergreen are excellent educators and deserve to be recognized for their dedicated work. I'm so happy they inspired you to become a teacher yourself!
