The parade, themed “Welcome Home,” is
being sponsored by American Legion Post 50, the City of Blue Island, the Blue
Island Park District and MetroSouth Medical Center. The parade will begin at 11
a.m. at Hart Park at 123rd and Western, proceed south on Western to Union
St., west on Union to Highland Ave., and north on Highland to Memorial Park at
128th St. A classic car show and military vehicle exhibit will take
place at the park immediately after the parade. Refreshments and entertainment
will also be available at the park.

Last year’s parade drew more than 90
entries and is viewable on YouTube under “Blue Island Veterans Day Parade
2012.” Its success led the Veterans Day National Committee to name Blue Island
as one of only two regional sites in Illinois for the celebration of Veterans
Day 2013.

The committee,
comprised of various national veterans and military organizations, selects a
number of regional sites for Veterans Day observances throughout the country.
From stirring parades and ceremonies, to military exhibits and tributes to
distinguished veterans, these events serve as models for other communities to
follow in planning their own observances.

In addition to the parade, Post 50
will conduct its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at
Veterans Plaza, Western Ave. at Grove St., Blue Island. The public is invited
to attend.
