Week in Review: Patch Parent in the News, Sports and More New Features

A recap of this week's top stories

The week after Snowmageddon 2011 proved very eventful. We started off hearing about Patch parent AOL's for $315 million. The combined companies will have 117 million monthly unique visitors in the U.S. and 270 million worldwide, based on numbers from comScore, December 2010. AOL said the transaction will create a new way for people to get local and global information in a timely and entertaining way.

Jesse Marx , the star of Doktor Kaboom! about his show at Moraine Valley which blends science, comedy and education. Marx later told us how Nojoud Basal received a clean bill of health on Wednesday after cranioplasty repair last month at Advocate Hope Hospital. He is free to go once conditions settle in Egypt.

We heard what happened at the Feb. 7 , and dug a little deeper into an issue raised by Trustee Norbert Smith, and backed by Trustee Carol Kyle, about the Evergreen Park Athletic Association. At Monday's Village Board meeting, Trustee Smith pushed for a new sign at the baseball field, which was dedicated to former trustee Robert Norris in 1987, and said that it's been years since a sign replaced the original sign. We introduced a sleu of new information on Wednesday, that will be available weekly, for your convenience. The Frugal Family column tells us deals around the Southland. The Grab & Go Kids Planner tells us where to find kid-friendly fun around the village and throughout the Southland. We met our first Evergreen Park Patch Whiz Kid, Tierney Brosnahan, a junior from Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School and Evergreen Park native. In our first MomTalk Q&A, Patch's Moms Council — local moms with a lot to say — took aim at the new 'Skins' TV show, and offered advice to parents whose kids might be hooked. Heather Blackmore clued us in on a Great Escape, that moms can participate in: a 5K race and obstacle course called Warrior Dash, that will be held at during the weekend of June 18. But this is not your ordinary race. Blackmore said  "it has ten muddy obstacles, with names like warrior roast, junk yard jam and hay fever, are scattered throughout the course."

In sports, Tom Ritter told us how Boys Basketball fell short in chasing the first conference win, in a 57-52. Hosted by EPCHS, the school Packed the Place for 'Operation Teen Safe Driving.' Grant money will help pay for T-shirts and activities stressing the dangers of distracted and impaired driving.

In Friday's , the crime reports delivered tales of oddity which include a bowling alley brawl to a thumb-tack attack.
