FBI Eyes Unabomber as Possible Tylenol Poisonings Suspect

A childhood prodigy in Evergreen Park, Ted Kaczynski left home for Harvard, and then the wilds of Colorado. Now the FBI wants DNA to rule him out as a suspect in Chicago's 1982 Tylenol killings.

A day after U.S. Marshals begin auctioning off items belonging to the onetime Evergreen Park child prodigy and Harvard-educated genius who grew up to become the Unabomber, Chicago FBI officials say they want to rule Ted Kaczynski out as a suspect in the 1982 Tylenol poisonings.

During the Tylenol poisoning case, investigators found that potassium cyanide was used, resulting in a recall of the product, and the killing of seven people.

Chicago FBI spokeswoman Cynthia Yates said the bureau has attempted to obtain DNA samples from many people to re-examine evidence involved in the 1982 Tylenol incidents, including Kaczynski, reports the New York Times.

“To date, Mr. Kaczynski has declined to voluntarily provide this sample," Yates said.

Officials never convicted anyone for the murder, but convicted James W. Lewis for mail fraud and extortion after he demanded $1 million in a letter to Tylenol’s manufacturer to “stop the killing,” said the Thursday report. Last year, officials reportedly took a sample of his DNA.
