Caution: Severe Weather Headed for the Southland

The National Weather Service has issued several weather warnings for the Chicago area.

The National Weather Service has issued several weather warnings for the Chicago area, including Southland municipalities. 

A hazardous weather outlook for the Southland and surrounding areas, including north central Illinois, northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana was issued earlier Saturday afternoon.

According to the weather service, thunderstorms could produce heavy rain, damaging winds higher than 60 miles per hour and hail up to two inches.

"Showers and thunderstorms will overspread the entire outlook area this afternoon and evening," said the service.

The National Weather Service issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for the area until 9 p.m. Runoff from the excessive rainfall will cause minor flooding, especially near small streams and lower water crossings, said the service.

Some locations within our coverage area that will experience minor flooding, according to the National Weather Service, include Chicago Heights and Flossmoor.

Additionally, the National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for several Illinois counties including Cook and Will in effect until 12 a.m. Sept. 4.
