Lemonade Done Just Right

Nothing says summer like icy cold, refreshing lemonade! Learn how to make up your own here...

Cooking in the Sylvester household has been a little sporadic the last month due to my changing taste buds. We would like to proudly announce that we are preparing for a new little Sylvester chef! He/She will arive by mid-November. We are so excited!!! So, I apologize to all of my readers for the delay in posting, but I didn't think that plain chicken noodle soup and saltine crackers was a very exciting food post. :)

As the weather is gradually getting warmer for the good of the season, I am reminded of one of my all time favorite spring/summer beverages: lemonade! I just love going to summer carnivals and festivals and getting those fresh lemon shake-ups...they are cool, refreshing, just a little bit of lemon and just a little bit of sweetness. Taking the extra time to prepare this lemonade is SO worth the little bit of extra work, and really, it's done before you know it!

In a small sauce pan, add 1 C water, 1 C sugar and lemon zest and start warming over medium heat. You want to slowly bring this to a boil, stirring gently. As soon as liquid starts to bubble, remove from heat and stir to ensure all sugar is melted. This is your lemon simple syrup.

In a 2qt pitcher or juice jug, add ice about a quarter of the way up, add fresh lemon juice (yes, fresh... not from a bottle or a plastic lemon!) then start adding some of your lemon simple syrup (I added about 1/2 of the batch to mine). Top off with water. Taste your lemonade and see if you'd like to add more syrup or more lemon. Remember to shake before serving! Keep stored in your refrigerator.

Remaining simple syrup can be used to make more lemonade or you can add it to seltzer water for your own "lemony soda"!

If you are of legal age, you can also use this to create your own cocktails; you can make lemonade using less water and add vodka, tequila, or whisky to make a fun at home adult beverage. You can also add the lemon simple syrup to your iced liquor for a stronger cocktail. Enjoy, and drink responsibly.
