Remembering Bleeker's Bowl

Bleekers Bowl in Evergreen Park has closed after more than half a century in business.

This weekend marked an end of an era in Evergreen Park.

Bleeker's Bowl, 3447 W. 95th St, had been in operation since the 1950s and has seen generations of residents walk through its doors and onto its lanes. Phil Kadner of Sun-Times Media recounts the events that led to the closure and reports that a Binny's Beverage Depot will soon call the location home.

You can't help but feel that the winds of change are sweeping through Evergreen Park this year. From the Evergreen Golf and Country Club's morph into a shopping center that includes a recently opened Menards and Meijer, to the impending demolition and redevelopment of The Plaza change is in the air.

Add to those the redevelopment of Webb Ford into a Mariano's Fresh Market and the changing face of Little Company of Mary Hospital and you have a town both moving away from its past and looking toward a new future.

While redevelopment is a natural progression in any town, you can't help but stop and remember what once was. The birthday parties or bowling leagues that were held inside Bleekers walls house decades of memories inform the collective memory of this community.

So as we look toward what the future holds, let's take some time to remember the past.
