Moon’s Burgers Closes

Tony Gambino III has apparently given up on trying to make a go of a restaurant at 3342 W. 95th St. in Evergreen Park.

Gambino first tried it with one of his Taco Fresco franchises, which have been successful elsewhere in the Chicago area but didn’t catch on in Evergreen Park or Tinley Park.

About a year ago, he borrowed a page from his family’s successful Moon’s Sandwich Shop at 16 S. Western Ave. and opened Tony Moon’s Burgers, which got generally good grades from online reviewers.

But Moon’s Burgers closed abruptly at the beginning of November. The phone number has been disconnected and the shop has a “for rent” sign in the window.

Demolition Starts at 111th Street and Cicero Avenue

Demolition started earlier this month on the shopping center at 111th Street and Cicero Avenue in Oak Lawn that was the subject of a lengthy court battle between the village and Sears Holding Co.

The wrecking ball is in the process of knocking down the shopping center and some buildings on Cicero Avenue including the former Harley-Davidson store to make way for redevelopment. Itasca-based Hamilton Partners is the company charged by the village with redeveloping the site once it has been cleared.

Oak Lawn purchased the 29-acre parcel from J.C. Penney in May 2011 and settled a lawsuit earlier this year with Sears, which had leased space for a Kmart store in the shopping center.

Medical Building Opens in Beverly

A new medical building was expected to open this week at 11250 S. Western Ave. in Beverly and it came about because of a leaky roof.

“The office needed to be renovated,” said Dr. Kevin Dolehide. “The roof was leaking.”

Dolehide and his father, Dr. Robert Dolehide, had worked together in the building for 20 years, and his father has been practicing medicine at the site for 49 years.

What started as a small project soon escalated.

“It went from a small project to a huge project,” said Dolehide. “The project tripled in size. We gutted the first and second floors and really worked on making it more convenient for the patient.”

It also took a year to finish, but father and son are happy. “It turned out really nice,” Dolehide said.

The new building has state-of-the-art equipment and a dozen examination rooms, he said. There is an adjacent MetroSouth Medical Center at Beverly building.

Dolehide said he didn’t hesitate when it came time to make the improvements, and he said he never thought about moving the practice.

“I live here,” he said. “I love Beverly. We are committed to the neighborhood.”

The family practice may soon have a third generation under its roof.

“My nephew may come in and join us,” Dolehide said.

Both Dolehides specialize in internal medicine and Kevin is also a gastroenterologist. Robert Dolehide’s brother, Gene, who opened the practice with him in 1963, was a general surgeon.

Robert Dolehide, who is 86, is going strong.

“As physicians, we never learned how to do anything else other than practicing medicine,” he said. “How can I think about retiring if I don’t even know how to play golf?”

Old Navy made its move last week and opened its new store on Wednesday inside Chicago Ridge Mall.

Fun World Serves Up Holiday Light Show

Odyssey Fun World in Tinley Park is continuing a holiday tradition it started last year with its Christmas Light Show.

The amusement park started the tradition last year when it strung 100,000 lights on the outside of its building and played Christmas music that was punctuated by the lights dancing on and off.

“We plan to have the lights in full swing by Monday,” said Clint Paraday, Odyssey general manager. “We’ll have more songs this year, and added the Grinch.”

The show will start each night at dusk and continue until about midnight through the first week in January. Motorists can pull over in front of the amusement park at Harlem and Oak Park avenues and listen to the music on 87.9-FM.

Hampton to Headline Holiday Sports Luncheon

Bears Hall of Famer Dan Hampton will headline the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce Annual Holiday Sports Luncheon on Dec. 4 at the Tinley Park Convention Center, 183rd Street and Harlem Avenue.

Laura Tews and Randy Simmons, this year’s Holiday Sports Luncheon co-chairs, said they are thrilled Hampton accepted the invitation to one of the Chamber’s most anticipated annual events.

“This is always such a gala and well-attended affair,” Tews said. “Last year, more than 500 people were there.”

The day starts at 10:30 a.m. with a cash bar and silent auction featuring exclusive sports memorabilia, tickets to games, lavish hotel weekend packages and much more. The auction benefits the chamber’s foundation scholarships.
