Village Seeking State Grant for Flood Relief

The Board of Trustees and Mayor James Sexton announced Tuesday night their plans to provide flood relief for subdivision residents in the southeast corner of the village.

The village Board of Trustees approved a request that would give residents living in a portion of Evergreen Park some long awaited flood relief.

In a miscellaneous item on the , Mayor James Sexton read the request by Village Public Works director William Lorenz, asking the village to apply for a $560,000 grant with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

The money would go toward repairing damaged sanitary sewers in the Mulholland subdivision, an area in the southeast corner of the village that's between Kedzie and Utica Avenues, directly south of Evergreen Park Public High School.

"This is very time sensitive and rather than passing up the opportunity to go out for the grant, I would like the board to consider this tonight, although it is not on the agenda," said Sexton.

Sexton said there has been flooding going on in the Mulholland subdivision for years, but that he's glad the village has a chance to offer some relief.

"Thanks to Mr. Lorenz and his staff, they're getting to the bottom of it," said Sexton.

Lorenz said the village is expecting to know by June whether or not it was granted the funds.
