How Do You Get Inspired At Church? SSTOT Question of the Night

Attendees at Sunday evening's third South Side Theology on Tap session were able to enjoy the summer afternoon by listening to Dr. Katie DeVries speak over Mexican food and drinks on St. Bernadette's lawn.

a religious series for young adults to discuss faith and life, featured , the Associate Director of the Young Adult Ministry Office for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

DeVries presented, “The Roman Missal: What’s Changing and Why?” While focusing on the new changes in the Roman Missal, a book of scriptures and prayers, Devries focused on the importance of why Catholics go to mass and the inspiration that the congregation receives from mass.

“Mass is place to come and quiet the noise, quiet the chaos. A time to listen to God,” DeVries said, “Mass gives us an opportunity to hear what God is saying to us.”

Many Catholics are motivated by the different aspects of Mass. Church go-er, Clair Nizavic said, “I play violin at church and after being inspired by a quote I have always felt like playing music is like praying twice.”

DeVries' focus on change in the church recognized how the church has evolved. She welcomed the members of the session to accept the change and look at it as a way to make attending church a better experience.

“Mass is supposed to energize us, to lift us up,” DeVries said, “We are meant to rock the world. We are significant players in this thing we call life.”

According to DeVries, the congregation has a role to play in church, other than being on the receiving end of mass. How do you get inspired at church?
