Welcome to “Chowdown Showdown,” a weekly feature where we take one type of food and ask readers to nominate their favorite places in Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Palos. This week we chowed down on the summer favorite--ice cream. We tallied the votes on each respective Patch site and Facebook page.
Each town crowned their own winners and we take the local champions and have our very own taste test to crown the overall best in the nearby 'burbs.
Evergreen Park Patch: Who doesn't like a classic? That's exactly what the Plush Horse offered in its butter pecan ice cream. The cream was rich in flavor with just the right ratio of ice cream to pecans. This dish took me back to hot Sunday afternoons from my childhood. 5 Stars
Oak Lawn Patch: Plush Horse's homemade butter pecan ice cream was over the top good adding to another fine afternoon of Chowdown Showdown gluttony. Great texture, good temp and flavorful. 5 Stars
Palos Patch: This is some creamy ice cream. The Plush Horse has been around forever and you can see why with a product like this. Each flavor packs a ton of flavor. 5 Stars
Evergreen Park Patch: The cheesecake ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery was simply delicious. Smooth in texture and my favorite dessert in ice-cream form...win! 4.5 Stars
Oak Lawn Patch: Perhpas Oak Lawn Patch readers were still reeling from the Chowdown Showdown Italian Beef controversy from a few weeks ago, or maybe the weather's getting warm and you people have lives. I see those softball diamonds lit up at 10 p.m. We didn't get any suggestions, so I went over to Cold Stone Creamery and ordered two scoops of mint and cheesecake ice cream in chocolate dipped waffle cones. Both were delish. We gave a little to the dog because we were sitting out in front of Starbucks and she was scaring people with her barking. 4.5 Stars.
Palos Patch: I ended up liking this one much more than I thought I would. The texture was right on, thick but not too dense. The flavor was subtle and not at all too sweet. 4.5 Stars
Evergreen Park Patch: We didn't have many suggestions this week, but thanks to our resident who suggested Wojo's Bubblegum ice cream. I knew the sweet bubblegummy flavor was coming, but I didn't expect the chunks of bubble gum in the ice cream! What a nice surprise.
Oak Lawn Patch: I love bubblegum ice cream. The only problem with Wojo's was that there weren't enough pieces of bubblegum in it. 4.5 Stars.
Palos Patch: This wins the prize for most appealing to one's inner child. The pink ice cream tasted like bubble gum in the best way. The little bits of candy gum inside the ice cream gave it some excitement. 4 Stars
and the winner is . . . . The Plush Horse. They must be doing something right at this Palos Park institution. In the end the creamy goodness and full flavor were just too hard to beat.
