A Sam’s Club security official said that at approximately 2 a.m. May 5, three individuals stormed into the store with their guns drawn by following night shift employees who were returning from a lunch break.

While the offenders appeared to be males, the security official working the unsolved case said that because they were completely covered from head to toe in dark clothing and wore facemasks, their gender, age and race are unknown.

“ All three had semi-automatic handguns,” the security official said. “We believe they were attempting to rob the store. We don’t know what their intentions were.”

The three offenders were observed entering and existing the store carrying a large duffle bag. Once inside the store, the security official said, the offenders herded employees into a group and made them lie down on the floor.

An employee was able to break away and flee the store, causing the offenders to panic and run.

“They didn’t get anything nor did they try,” the Sam’s Club security official said. “They picked up the bag and ran out the front door. We don’t know what they planned on taking because it never got that far.”

The gunmen fled through the same door they came in to a getaway vehicle where it appeared that a driver was waiting for them in front of the store.

Two of the gunmen wore black shoes, gloves, jeans, hoodies and facemasks so that “you can’t see through anything,” the security official said.

The third gunman wore a dark-colored coat, jeans, hoody, white shoes and white gloves and a facemask.

People working inside the store on the overnight shift were stocking shelves and other tasks. No one was injured in the robbery attempt.

Sam’s Club is working with Evergreen Park police and hope that by releasing some details of the May 5 robbery attempt that a member or members of the public will step forward with information to solve the crime.

No similar crimes have been reported at other Sam’s Clubs in the Chicago area.

Those with information about the attempted robbery on the big box store are asked to call Evergreen Park Police Department’s non-emergency number at 708-422-2142 and ask to speak to the detective division.

“We want to solve this,” the security official said.
