Marist Sophomore Geometry Team Finishes 1st in State Competition

Marist's Sophomore Geometry team finished first in the state competition. Congratulations students!

 

For the second year in a row, Marist High School Mathematics students have a unique claim to faim: Geometry Champions!

On Saturday, May 5, 2012, the Marist Geometry team finished first place in the annual Illinois State Math Finals at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. This was the second year in a row that the team won the honor.

The Marist Sophomore Team includes:

  • Liam Gibbs Most Holy Redeemer/Evergreen Park
  • James Costin St.Catherine/Oak Lawn
  • Jack O’Sullivan St.Linus/Oak Lawn
  • Anna Schreiber Cardinal Bernardin/Orland Park
  • Sara Hansen Homer Junior High/Homer Glen
  • Kathy Ulaczek St.Alexander/Palos Heights
  • Sandra Hansen Homer Junior High/Homer Glen
  • Anne Marie Leonard St.George/Orland Park
  • Maeve McDermott St.Christopher/Midlothian
  • Carrie Olsen St.Damian/Oak Forest

Out of the 167 participants in the competition, highlights include James Costin finishing in 2nd place and Anna Scheiber placing in 3rd place.

Marist also performed well in other competitions.

  • Algebra Two – 2nd in State
  • Freshman/Sophomore 8 person – 6th in State
  • Freshman/Sophomore Relay – 4th in State

Congratulations to the team, moderators Owen Glennon and Jeff Nicholson, and assistant coaches John Brekenfelder and Julie Kamper!
