Another Firefighter Dies In Line of Duty

Chicago firefighter Walter Patmon Jr., 61, suffers cardiac arrest after responding to small kitchen fire on Sunday evening.

Less than a week after the funeral for CFD Capt. Herbie Johnson, another Chicago firefighter from Beverly has died in the line of duty.

Firefighter Walter Patmon Jr, 61, suffered a heart attack after responding to a small kitchen fire on Sunday evening.

According to Chicago Breaking News, Patmon experienced shortness of breath after returning to his firehouse in the 1700 block of West 95th Street. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park where he was pronounced dead at 11:21 p.m.

Patmon was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. Known by his childhood nickname of “Bubble,” he was just a few years shy of retirement, ABC News-Ch. 7 reported.

Patmon is a resident of the Burnside neighborhood. Early Monday morning, firefighters draped purple mourning bunting over the garage doors of the Beverly firehouse.

The veteran Chicago firefighter leaves a wife and three grown daughters. Ch. 7 News reported that Patmon is to be buried with the same honors reserved for city firefighters that die in the line of duty.

He was recalled by colleagues as a father-type figure who was a mentor to younger firefighters.

Beverly-Mt. Greenwood Patch will continue to update this story.
